Student Stories

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” — St. Augustine

Students are why we do what we do. Each deserves a chance to experience the world. To gain confidence by doing something daring. To see life in a new light. What travel can do for students is nearly immeasurable, and for most, it's also unimaginable. But dreams do come true. Here are some of the stories that show how travel changes young lives for good.

  • Daniel

Prior to the SYF Next Generation trip, Daniel Khalaf was lost: He was behind in school, did not see a future for himself and was surrounded by tough street life. His travel experience inspired him to complete high school and focus on his post-secondary options. Read Daniel's story. Read More
  • Jackson

In his winning essay for the Ripley Hunter scholarship, Jackson didn't write about his favorite trip, but about one small event that changed the way he saw the world. Read Jackson's story. Read More
  • Katherine

Traveling to rural Cambodia with 11 schoolmates and a handful of teachers was no ordinary spring break. In the remote village of Pailin in Battanbang Province, Katherine shared a life-altering journey. Read Katherine's story. Read More

What are teachers saying?

  • Thank you again for your generous support of my students. The educational tour we took was my very first, and now I cannot wait to take another. I know I will be searching for financial support in the future, and want to ensure I have the opportunity to come to your organization. You are one of the very few that actually helped, and I cannot express how grateful the students are, as am I.

Kristen Goree, Buckingham Charter Magnet High School

  • I extend the sincerest of thanks to you for allowing us to see the fires kindled in the eyes of our students.

Lisa Faulkner-Jones, Charles Hart Middle School

  • I see what SYF has done for my students and it overwhelms me and I thank you.

    Roger Duran, Jefferson High School

  • Thank you for awarding a gift to Travis and therefore our entire band.

    D. VandeGiessen, Band Director
